Having traveled around the world in formal institutional settings in several languages, I was awed by witnessing the agile translation capabilities of Jesse Tomlinson during a conference in Guadalajara. She readily translated for both English and Spanish speakers, shifting from one language to the other, and doing so for successively different speakers at opening remarks, keynotes, and closing comments. At our summit/cumbre of government, business, university, and NGO leaders her translation phrasings were exact in grammar and diction (the English, I know for sure) and engaged the audiences of hundreds. Jesse’s final “tour de force” were translations at dinner – again of several English and Spanish speakers alternating – which were delivered with dramatic exuberance.

Discovering a literary translator like Jesse Tomlinson has been a joy. Jesse strives to understand the spirit of the text and finds the best way to translate it, paying attention to details such as context and the selection of words and expressions. It is easy to work with her, because she makes sure that the translation expresses what the text wants to express, not just that it says it in English. And she is also reliable when it comes to delivery times. With Jesse I forgot about bad translation experiences.
